Are you struggling? Become more resilient. Exhausted? Practice better self-care. Sound familiar?
What if resilience and self-care aren’t enough? What if our exhaustion is not the result of our (wrong) choices as individuals? What if it is a symptom of certain institutionalized beliefs and practices of the dominant (white) culture about individualism, proving moral worth through work, and disregard of radical differences in privilege and access?
The terms self-care and burnout have surprising linguistic origins in the experiences of activists and advocates for traumatized and systemically oppressed people. In this conversation, we will explore how we can reclaim these ideas as guides to developing communities of care in our work in service to the community.
