This two-day seminar is geared toward those who have started to practice before immigration courts and want to improve their skills, learn more, or need a refresher. The training will provide a discussion on various topics, with examples and breakout exercises to deepen your skills.
Day One:
On Day 1 we will discuss the “new” master calendar hearing, including responding to scheduling orders, entering pleadings, and other preliminary issues that arise prior to scheduling a merits hearing. In the afternoon, we will deep dive into issues around preparing witnesses and strategies for presenting witness testimony, with a spotlight on expert witnesses and the unique issues that arise in that context.
Day Two:
On Day 2 we will focus on the immigration consequences of criminal offenses. We will begin with an overview of the criminal grounds of inadmissibility and deportability , criminal bars to relief, and the definition of conviction for immigration purposes. During the afternoon, we will discuss how to analyze a criminal offense using the categorical approach, and we will take a closer look at Texas statutes.
