About Us

Formed in 2023 as a 501(c)(3) the Texas Immigration Law Council (Council) is a nonpartisan statewide immigration legal resource and policy organization working to protect and promote the rights of immigrants and refugees of all nationalities in Texas. Through educational, technical support, and advocacy initiatives, the Council works to create immigration reforms that protect the rights of immigrants and refugees in Texas.

Job Summary

Texas Immigration Law Council seeks to hire a Director of Policy and Legal Services to lead the Council’s policy and legal services’ initiatives. Applicants must have strong leadership and communication skills, a track record of success on advancing policy goals, and a deep understanding of immigration law, immigration practice, and immigration policy issues. Success will require this Director to build relationships of trust with a diverse coalition of immigrant rights, workers’ rights, children’s rights, business groups, law enforcement, and faith groups who are committed to move forward immigrant and refugee policy issues in Texas. The Director will also lead a team that provides technical support and legal resources to immigration legal service providers, many of whom are operating in rural areas of Texas.

Location & Travel Demands

  • This position is remote. Travel to many locations within Texas is required.

Primary Job Functions

  • Policy Leadership: Implement comprehensive policy strategies aligned with the Council’s mission and goals. Work with diverse coalition partners to support impactful policy responses to federal, state, and municipal immigration policy issues.
  • Education and Outreach: Lead efforts to educate stakeholders, the public, the media and policymakers about immigrant policy issues and trends in Texas, and the need for common sense reforms.
  • Coalition Building: Foster relationships of trust with diverse policy groups, business associations, faith-based organizations, immigrant rights organizations and other stakeholders who are dedicated to promoting the rights of immigrants and refugees living in Texas. Support efforts to move forward a coordinated response to protect the rights of immigrants and refugee rights in Texas.
  • Legal Services Leadership: Lead efforts for the Council to provide technical support and legal resources to immigration legal service providers in Texas, particularly in underserved areas. Lead the Council’s work to support organizations who wish to advocate for reforms when immigrants in Texas face barriers or unfair treatment when accessing legal protections.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • 5 years of experience (minimum) in policy advocacy, with a demonstrated focus on immigration issues.
  • Coalition building skills. Stellar leadership and partnership building skills, including the ability to manage a coalition, collaborate effectively, and build unity behind policy and educational initiatives.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate complex immigration policy information into accessible content for diverse audiences.
  • Ability to collect, analyze and respond to controversial, often divisive immigration policy issues in a fact-based manner consistent with the organization’s policy goals.
  • Immigration expertise. Deep understanding of immigration law, immigration practice, and immigration policy issues.
  • Strong understanding of the Texas legislative process and socio-political dynamics in Texas.
  • Commitment to a nonpartisan approach. Deep commitment to upholding a nonpartisan stance when executing all job functions. This commitment is rooted in the belief of data driven decision-making and a respect for open dialogue and respectful collaboration with stakeholders who hold different opinions is critical to success.
  • Demonstrated track record of effectively conveying nuanced information on immigration issues to the media, policy makers and the public.
  • Excellent public speaking skills to engage with diverse audiences, including policymakers, the public, community groups, and the media.
  • Technology proficiency. Familiarity and interest in leveraging emerging digital tools and platforms to move forward the organization’s goals.
  • A commitment to fostering a culture that values individuals and perspectives from all backgrounds, identities, and experiences. A recognition that inclusive collaboration leads to stronger outcomes.

Compensation & Benefits

The salary range is $115,000 – $135,000 per year, commensurate with experience. Generous benefits include employee and dependent health, vision and dental insurance, flexible work schedules, vacation and holidays, and professional development opportunities.
